The mission of the Psychology Service at the Utah State Hospital is to deliver excellent inpatient care to those who suffer severe or chronic mental illness. The Psychology Service provides a range of high quality clinical assessments, consultations and interventions. Neuropsychological, forensic and health psychology are specialized areas of focus for our internship and training program.
Current contributions by the Utah State Hospital psychological staff include but are not limited to some of the following;
- Comprehensive, complex, psychological assessment differentiating multiple diagnoses, mixed etiologies, and co-morbid medical conditions.
- Competence to stand trial evaluations
- Assessment of feigning/malingering response style
- Behavioral consultation and management plans focus on reduction of targeted behaviors as well as increasing prosocial behaviors.
- Pediatric Neurocognitive Remediation designed to target areas of cognitive deficit ranging from mild to severe with the goal of achieving restorative function by stimulating brain activity and taking advantage of periods of increased neurogenesis.
- Outcome measurement (e.g. Brief Psychiatric Ratings Scale-Extended).
- Provision of empirically validated groups and individual therapies including cognitive behavioral based Depression Management, Anger Management, as well as taking a role in a multidisciplinary comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy team. Psychology also provides behaviorally based groups (e.g. Chain Analysis Group), more process oriented groups (e.g. Men's Substance Abuse Group), as well as advanced Competency Restoration groups.
